URI NATIONAL DEBATE

INTERFAITH AND THE ENVIRONMENT

“Religion and belief are motivating forces which guide our existence and make it meaningful. What we can rightly demand is religious freedom, and what we correspondingly must supply are the highest ethical standards of responsible conduct”

Andrew Clark, General Secretary

International Association for Religious Freedom 2000-2004

http://www.iarf.net/

Concept

The Debate will enable up to nineteen hundred and fifty people, representing all the faiths, to come together to transcend religious barriers and contribute to community cohesion rather than community conflict.

The theme of the Environment (physical, spiritual, emotional, political and created) has been chosen because it is an area of excitement for young adults (under the age of thirty) of all faiths and the debate is deliberately targeted towards a young audience drawn from all the Faith groups.

The concept of “a Creator God” lies at the heart of the World's faiths. This area of common ground provides an opportunity for people of all faiths to unite in an active response to climate change and the imperative of effective environmental stewardship - by working together, as well as within their own faith community.

Purpose

The initiative will reach constituents of all of the UK 's religions and faiths at a grass roots level and engage them in a purposeful, action-oriented debate on how they can live with the environment in an ecologically wise way.

A Campaign Pack for 8,000 Inter Faith Discussion and Action Groups throughout the country will be launched at the event. At the same time an associated interactive website, based at St Ethelburga's, Bishopsgate ( http://www.stethelburgas.org/ ), will take feedback from the 8,000 groups, via the web, to facilitate an inter faith panel in publishing Ten Cardinal Commitments for living with the environment in an ecologically wise way.

Faith Groups who sign up to this will be awarded a Marque or certificate showing their on-going commitment. By joining this network they will continue to have information and encouragement for their members.
