UNITED RELIGIONS INITIATIVE: AN OVERVIEW |
The United Religions Initiative is a locally rooted
international movement to build interfaith co-operation. URI exists as a force
for good all over the world in local communities that are globally connected in
their pursuit of a more hopeful future. Its essence is expressed in its
Charter. The first URI UK gathering was held
at St George's House, Windsor, in 1998. Consultations were held with faith
leaders and interfaith organizations; it was agreed that URI's focus in the UK
should be on young people and programmes of action. The formal launch
of URI UK was at the Greenwich Dome in August 2000. Four hundred people
gathered to witness the blessings of faith leaders from ten major religions and
the signing of the URI Charter. URI operates through an open structure
based on Co-operation Circles, organized around
areas, themes or activities. These are connected to a Global Council,
responsible for URI worldwide. |
