INTERNATIONAL INTERFAITH CENTRE

The International Interfaith Centre promotes interreligious understanding and co-operation between different faith communities and organisations of religious or spiritual conviction.

In support of this aim, IIC will:

  1. facilitate communication between international interfaith organisations including an annual meeting of the International Interfaith Organisation Network.
  2. develop a study centre for high quality research and education on interreligious issues.
  3. organise projects and conferences which promote religious conflict resolution and dialogue.

WORLD CONFERENCE

In 2006 the International Interfaith Centre and Tolerance Limited will be holding an international conference on faith and the media. The conference will allow faith and interfaith groups to gain a better understanding of how the media work, and the media will gain insight into the importance of faith and interfaith groups in society and their force for world peace. Developing better understanding of each others’ perspectives and developing relationships based on mutual understanding will improve the media coverage of religion and interfaith issues.

Some Conference Themes:
Religion, the media and terrorism.
The positive power of the media.
Workshops on media and faith group communication.
The use of language in religious reporting.

For more information about the world conference contact the IIC via email iic@interfaith-center.org or visit the IIC website at www.interfaith-center.org or Tolerance Ltd at www.tolerancelimited.com.

CORRYMEELA PROJECT

The IIC is planning on bringing together Palestinian and Israel youths with Protestant and Catholic youths in Northern Ireland for a conference at the Corrymeela Centre. The objective is to allow young people from areas of religious conflict to encounter others who also live in a region afflicted by religiously motivated violence. Exposure to the similarities and differences of the two regional conflicts will contribute to the breakdown of stereotypes and lead to a better understanding of the needs and motivations of the other.

OTHER IIC PROJECTS

  • Interfaith e-learning:
    www.interfaithstudies.org
will bring you into touch with issues, organisations and initiatives for inter-religious understanding and co-operation. It offers an introduction to interfaith activity and concerns in a way that will enable you to learn about its history and methodologies and offer you the resources to become involved.

  • Faith and Interfaith:
a video series of interview with individuals from different religious and cultural backgrounds, including theologians Keith Ward and John Hick as well as peace worker Yehuda Stolov and Farid Esack. Available for purchase through the IIC.

  • Co-ordinating meetings
of the network of international interfaith organisations to promote co-operation and communication between the 14 participating organisations.

  • Directory of Faith Communities in Oxford:
research and publication of this local resource.

  • Friends Conference
scheduled for autumn 2004 to explore values education.

GLOBAL RESEARCH SURVEY

The questionnaire, Attitudes Towards Interfaith, was developed in partnership with the Welsh National Centre for Religious Education at the University of Wales, Bangor. The objective of the survey, conducted at the Parliament of the World’s Religions, is to teach us more about people’s attitudes towards the nature of religious truth, interfaith activity, and the relationship of personality to faith. The IIC feels that this research is essential for all those who work on interfaith issues as it enables people to understand their constituents. When we understand what people actually believe we will be more able to assist the building of an interreligiously tolerant global community.

Initial results will be posted on www.interfath-center.org as soon as the analysis is complete early 2005. Further analysis will be published in the international journal Interreligious Insight.

This project has been partially funded by The Pluralism Project at Harvard University.
